St. Hannibal Empowerment Centre

St. Hannibal Empowerment Center (SHEC) is a religious organization of the Rogationists of the Heart of Jesus. It is a community of Spirit-led persons which aims to follow Jesus Christ in his union with his Father and in his proclamation of the kingdom of God. It is an inserted community among the squatters. The goal of SHEC is to empower the poor people of Metro Manila, Philippines, through housing, livelihood, education, health, waste management, youth and values formation.

Mission: Its mission is to empower the poorest of the poor and catalyze an integral Christian transformation of urban poor communities in collaboration with the local Church by a holistic process that addresses concerns on housing, livelihood, education, health, environment and sanitation, justice and peace, youth formation and values formation. The goals of SHEC consist of assisting in alleviating poverty among urban poor communities in Pasay and other cities in Metro Manila; and building the foundation of community transformation through intensive values formation. Its objectives are, specifically, to facilitate the organization and formation of people’s organization that are self-sufficient and empowered, facilitate the values and spiritual formation and capability building of urban poor leaders, to assist the urban poor / informal settlers of Pasay and other cities in Metro Manila in realizing their dreams of achieving security of tenure through in-city relocation, to facilitate the implementation of economic programs and basic social services in urban poor communities, and to facilitate access to formal education in favor of the poor and deserving students.

Pray therefore…help therefore…


The Union of Prayer for Vocation (UPV) in coordination with St. Hannibal Christian Community (SHaCC) and St. Hanibal Empowerment Center conducted a Medical Mission in St. Hannibal Training Center for the people of Malibay, Pasay City.
The Union of Prayer for Vocations is composed of dedicated lay catholic individuals who responded to God’s call to become apostles of the Rogate. This was founded by St. Hannibal Mary Di Francia, Patron of Vocations. It was established on December 8, 1900 in Messina, Italy. March 30, 2008

Presenting the Graduates!


After five months of long training, the students of the first batch of Basic Reflexology and Basic Swedish Massage posted themselves with a big smile during their graduation. Recollection

The plight of the homeless has touched the hearts great persons from De La Salle HS ’53. Their commitment to assist homeless has carved an indelible mark of goodness in the hearts of the poor. Another round of visit to Mayor Peewee Trinidad transpired to update him about the housing programs of SHEC. The leaders have been assured of his continual support to all their undertakings for the progress of Pasay. February 8, 2008

A Priest for the Poor!


Fr. Orville Cajigal, SHEC’s Assistant Executive Director, celebrated his 2nd Priestly Anniversary with a Holy Mass at PAL Gate 1, Maricaban, Pasay City. Fr. Dexter Prudenciano and Fr. Ariel Tecson joined him in thanking God for the gift of Priesthood. Fr. Orville is indeed a priest for the poor and a gift to the people of Pasay City. January 21, 2008

SHEC and SHaCC 4th Foundation Day!


The St. Hannibal Christian Community (SHaCC) and St. Hannibal Empowerment Center joyfully celebrated their 4th Anniversary. The great event was highlighted by the Eucharistic Celebration which was presided by Fr. Tony Navarette, the Parish priest of San Juan Nepumoceno Parish, Malibay Pasay City. Welcome Fr. Vito!


Fr. Vito Di Marzio, RCJ, a Rogationist Priest who is currently assigned in California, made a surprised visit to St. Hannibal Subdivision Phase II. He was really happy to see that the people who were from the “Tripa de Galina Creek” are now living in their descent houses with their children. January 8, 2008

Climbing high!


Going up to a high mountain is like getting closer to God. The staffs of SHEC want to get closer to God. They need to recall the graces poured by God for the past year. This leads to planning, according to the will of the Spirit, what is best for SHEC in the year to come. SHEC is very fortunate to have a group of dedicated people who want to spend their lives to serve the poor. December 18-22, 2007

To celebrate the birth of Jesus reminds us of the immense joy that he brought in the life of Mary and Joseph. The SHEC and SHaCC communities feel the same joy of having Jesus at the center of their life. And so there is the reason to thank God and to rejoice!

This is the day that the Lord has made. It is a time of blessings and a time of great rejoicing. New housing units were turned over to housing beneficiaries from the two subdivisions of St. Hannibal. The event was graced by His Eminence Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales. Other partner agencies joined in the momentous celebration like the Habitat for Humanity, Men of the Sacred Heart, Pondo ng Pinoy, DLS HS ’53 and many others from the government and non-government agencies. SHEC is very fortunate to have been visited by a certain group called “Carl Duisberg Association of the Philippines.” The group is headed by Engr. Eric and Ms. Lea Gatchalian. As part of their outreach program, the Law Students from Ateneo De Manila University took time to experience construction work in St. Hannibal Subdivision, Phase II. Though it was not easy to work under the heat of the sun, the group enjoyed in their work. October 27, 2007

Wow! It’s TESDA!


To help the people become skillful and eventually earn for a living, TEDSA has come to the rescue. They conducted reflexology sessions in 60 hours for the housing beneficiaries. October 20, 2007

Forum on People Empowerment


To enhance the knowledge of the people about empowerment, the Justice Committee of SHaCC launched a forum on “Governance and People Empowerment.” The guest speaker was Ms. Evita Jimenez of the Center for People Empowerment in Governance (CenPEG). To help the people develop their own vegetable gardens, a group of Architects from the TAO-Pilipinas and from the University of Philippines came over to assist. The Health Committee of SHaCC organized a Lakbay –Aral (educational tour) activity in UP Los Baños, Laguna. The purpose was to increase in the knowledge of herbal medicine regarding its use and relevance. October 16, 2007
