Rogate: Praying for Holy Apostles for the Church. St. Hannibal realized most deeply the need to beg the Lord to send laborers because the harvest is rich but the laborers are few. Also, St. Hannibal knew he had to pray not just for laborers. They ought to be holy laborers—pastors who ought to think, feel and act like Jesus; pastors who are sent after God’s own heart (Jer 3:15).

How is it to be sent as pastor in the Philippine Church? How is it to be a Rogationist? How is it to be a priest according to the heart of Jesus?

There could be 101 answers as God’s mystery remains inexhaustible. But there is a distinctive aspect which may be gleaned from the Bible: God’s heart, Jesus’ heart is a heart for the poor and oppressed.

Then the LORD said, “I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians… The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have also seen how the Egyptians oppress them. So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.” (Ex 3:8-10)

In the New Testament, Luke portrays Jesus as having the aforementioned heart of Yahweh. Jesus’ ‘inaugural address’ when he began his public ministry shows him as one who has been sent especially for the poor and oppressed:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me

to bring good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives

and recovery of sight to the blind,

to let the oppressed go free,

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Lk 4:18-19)

The aforementioned biblical texts constitute a solid foundation for the Church’s commitment to serve the marginalized. Accordingly, LG #13 encourages a life of communion and sharing which succinctly expresses the spirit of preferential option and love for the poor. This is especially relevant in Asia where, as the Federation of Asian Bishop’s Conference recognizes, poverty and oppression constitute a major and exigent problem. This is a reason why in the 90’s, the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines (or PCP II) committed the Philippine Church to be a Church of the Poor.

The Rogationist Family rejoiced with the whole Church last November 26, 2011 with the ordination to the priesthood of Rev. Arlene O. Gumangan, RCJ. He was promoted to the sacred order of priests by the Most Rev. Ernesto A. Salgado, DD, STD, Archbishop of Nueva Segovia, Ilocos Sur.

Fr. Arlene’s ordination is an answer to the Rogate Ergo. Fr. Arlene is also a gift to the Philippine Church as she strives to be a Church of the Poor. This is very obvious owing to the fact that Fr. Arlene lives among the poor of Pasay as he journeys with them in their struggle for social justice under the umbrella of the St. Hannibal Empowerment Center. Needless to say, Fr. Arlene’s priesthood is a response to the challenge of being a Church of the Poor: In a Church of the Poor, the shepherds, the priests in particular, are especially called to practice ‘pastoral charity.’ This is a way of life which, according to Blessed John Paul II, is “marked, molded and characterized by the way of thinking and acting proper to Jesus Christ, head and shepherd of the Church…(PDV #21)” John Paul II continues to explain that the “essential content of pastoral charity is the gift of self, the total gift of self to the Church, following the example of Christ (PDV #23).”

Kudos, Fr. Arlene! May the Lord of the harvest send more laborers like you!

Rogate: Being in God’s Presence—A Melodious Life of Service Attuned to the Divine Music. St. Hannibal was once asked: Why do people go wrong? The pious “man of God” (a title given to St. Hannibal by those who knew him personally) answered, “because they are not accustomed to being in God’s presence.”

Being in God’s presence was second nature to St. Hannibal. Even as a child, he was already aware of this precious treasure in his life. Of this, St. Hannibal claimed: “The Lord has granted me no supernatural gifts, except spirit of faith and the awareness of His divine presence. Since I was a child when I was with the Cistercian fathers, He visited me with gentle emotions—interior joy. When he excited me to love Him, I knew that it was God’s will for me to stay in His presence.”

St. Hannibal’s spirituality of being in God’s presence resulted in dedicating his life in serving the poor. He was then very much like Jesus, who, as a result of his connectivity or oneness with his Father, was poured out in mission for total salvation (salvation of humanity and creation), most especially the poor.

Being in God’s presence may be likened to a musical piece. When one is attuned to God, one’s life will exude harmonious notes, constituting sounds that form a very pleasant divine melody echoing in the lives of the poor in the form of decent homes, sustainable livelihood and solidarity with victims of calamities such as typhoons.

Both metaphorically and literally, the aforementioned spirituality of being in God’s presence as expressed in divine melodies happened in SHEC when, last October 22, 2011, the Essentials Choir staged a concert entitled, Sing Praise, Build Homes. The proceeds went to SHEC’s Phase 3 housing project and to the victims of recent typhoons.

The following lines from the concert show a glimpse of the spirituality of being in God’s presence that results in the proclamation of good news to the poor:

Yes, God will be all in all! God will fully reign! His Kingdom will prevail! We will then go to a better place. We keep this vision anchored firmly in our hearts despite seemingly hopeless situations, for we believe in a faithful God whose love endures forever. This is a cause for rejoicing. With jubilant hearts, we glorify and praise God for making humanity’s and creation’s dream of salvation as his unwavering vision. We exult in his will that the homeless of Phase 3 be given decent homes.

How is it to be saved? Jesus has a simple tip as written in Mt 25, 31-46: Any good done to Jesus merits salvation. In this context, Jesus says, “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, you do it unto me.” Who are the least? They are the poorest of the poor, the hungry, the oppressed, the homeless like the families residing at Phase 3. Jesus’ passion is to shower the poor with compassion—that kind of mercy which is intimately wedded with justice and love. It is not only about prayers and sympathies. More important, it takes concrete forms like food and decent homes. Jesus invites us to imbibe his compassion and share our blessings with the poor. This is an inevitable way to salvation. The concrete way presented now to us is to be compassionate to the homeless of phase 3. In doing so, as one family, as children of God, we can wholeheartedly affirm and proclaim, “HOW LOVELY IS YOUR DWELLING PLACE”.

Yes, how lovely indeed is God’s dwelling place, which is also our dwelling place, especially if we work for God’s Kingdom of love, peace, justice, truth and prosperity for all—for humans and the rest of creation. Doing so will not be that easy. Conflicts abound. Even Jesus was not spared of the cross. But the story never ends there. God’s vindication will have its last say. Jesus resurrected. He emerged as a victor because he held on to God’s vision for a better world. It is worthwhile indeed to keep on holding to God’s vision for SHEC’s Phase 3 project. With generous people like you who cheerfully share in Jesus’ compassionate heart, the poor are ever assured that God’s love will last forever. This, needless to say, is an indispensable way of fulfilling the commandments: love of God which is done through love of the neighbor. Yes, being in love with God is necessarily being in love with the neighbor, especially the least. If you take on the compassion of Jesus, doing the commandments will be second nature. You’d love doing it even if you can’t fully understand why.

Rogate: Unfailing Faith and Trust in God Amidst Trials. In empowering the poor of his time, St. Hannibal went through many challenges. He felt frustrations. There were moments when his spirit was dampened. Of these, he wrote: “Often I have knocked on iron doors in vain, atrocity has been my verdict, get out of here, you person insane, suffer the pain for doing your bit.”

These were but normal and ordinary about being human. Even Jesus experienced deep anguish (see Mk) But, like in the case of Jesus, ordinary pains became extraordinary religious experiences for St. Hannibal because he lived in God’s embrace. He never failed to trust in God, no matter how uncertain things seemed. This is likewise the kind of faith we find in St. Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint, whose feast we celebrate in the month of September. It is also the kind of faith embraced by the SHEC community as they struggle for a more humane world in their daily existence.

Phase 2 General Assembly. In a general assembly held at the phase 2 housing site last Sept. 4, 2011, the Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC), through Ms Jane Duque, discussed the restructuring and condonation program with the HOA2 officers, George Espin and the Phase 2 beneficiaries. Also, questions and concerns pertinent to the program were addressed. To work for decent homes for the poor has been one of the greatest struggles in promoting justice in the Philippines. Nonetheless, with ongoing dialogue and cooperation, the dream of homes for the poor continues to be much closer to realization.

Welcome, Beneficiaries! Last Sept. 9, 2011, George Espin and the HOA 2 officers conducted an orientation/meeting with the second batch of newly accepted beneficiaries. The progress of the housing project is a cause of rejoicing. For indeed it is a manifestation that justice continues to flow on the land!

All for Mother Creation. To acquire/enhance knowledge and skills in proper waste disposal, SHEC, through the initiative of Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ, conducted a solid waste management training last Sept. 11, 2011 at the St. Hannibal Training Center, Malibay, Pasay City. This was attended by 47 participants, with Josie Satajo, Nelyn Balbalosa, Anabella Lagaran, Emmanuel Henon, Marilyn Pogoy as facilitators. Truly, activities for the care and integrity of creation is an essential aspect of Jesus’ and the Church’s mission. This should be more sharply realized especially with the recent ecological calamities.

Attitude Check. A kingdom worker ought to be Christ-like in terms of commitment, character and dedication. As part of fraternal camaraderie among SHEC employees, and to constantly remind themselves of being configured to Christ always, the employees underwent a work attitude evaluation last Sept. 21, 2011 at the SHEC office. Self-improvement is an on-going process, which is why evaluations are opportunities for growth, for the betterment of the self and, consequently, of the services rendered for the Kingdom of God.

ROGATE: Trusting in God’s Providence. It is August. In the 19th century, this month witnessed to the strong faith of St. Hannibal. He trusted in the Lord even in seemingly hopeless situations. He struggled. It was not easy. He hoped against hope. In the end, he never doubted God’s providence, and his little failures turned into little pieces of light that empowered the poor to go on. The gospels counsel us to “seek first the Kingdom of God, and all will be given… (see Mt 6:33)” Seeking the kingdom requires a solid trust in God’s providence. This entails struggles, but God assures the faithful that those who trust him will never be disappointed (see Rom 10:11).

Trusting in God’s providence—this is the way of Jesus…the way that St. Hannibal followed…the way that SHEC continues to live by as it accompanies the poor in their struggle to hope against hope.

General Assembly with New Beneficiaries.
Welcoming new beneficiaries is indeed heartwarming as it is a manifestation that God’s Kingdom of justice continues to spread. This has been the spirit that filled the respective general assemblies last August 7 and 12, 2011. The first day was allotted for a general orientation. In the second day, the following were discussed: condonation/restructuring program of SHFC, arrears of individuals who were removed or who backed out, details of monthly amortization and signing of agreements. The activities were held at the SHEC office.

Meeting on Basic Health Education.
Last August 12, 2011, __________________ presided a meeting which was attended by ___________________. Among other things, the meeting was called for the turn-over of the module and visual aids for the Basic Health Education. Also, the two week experience of the medical students was recapitulated. The meeting was held at the St. Hannibal Training Center, Malibay, Pasay.

Meeting with Fr. Herman Abcede, RCJ.

August 15, 2011 was a very opportune moment for SHEC Staff and some leaders of SHaCC. They had the occasion to celebrate the mass, meet and dialogue with Fr. Herman Abcede, RCJ, the Rogationist Major Superior of the Philippine Delegation and his council. Through the meeting, the superior general was informed of the programs of SHaCC. The meeting was held at the St. Hannibal Training Center, Malibay, Pasay.

For the signing of an initial master list, and to witness its posting and discuss the issue, a general assembly with the concerned people of PAL Gate 1 was held last August 17, 2011. Also, the event was attended by the following: SHEC, NHA, HOA3, MIAA, Housing Board, UPAO, Barangay officials and PCUP.

ROGATE: Following the Footsteps of St. Hannibal and St. Paul. July 2011 has been devoted to livelihood. Yes, all the committees of SHEC work for a living while doing service to the poor, all because of their commitment to the values and goals of the Kingdom of God. Needless to say, this is a way of following the footsteps of St. Hannibal. When he was struggling to purchase buildings for the orphans in the slums, St. Hannibal deemed it a part of God’s providence that the beneficiaries had various livelihoods to support themselves. Coupled with catechism and administration of the sacraments, St. Hannibal drove home the point that holistic salvation consisted in both temporal and spiritual nourishment—this indeed is a dynamic equivalent of today’s concept of integral evangelization.

Also, the aforementioned spirituality of SHEC draws inspiration from St. Paul who used to intertwine his work for the Kingdom with his livelihood projects (See 1 Cor 9:4-23; 1 Thess 2:2-12; 2 Thess 3: 6-9).

Following St. Hannibal and St. Paul, SHEC is truly living up to its name as an empowerment center.

Empowered facilitators empowering the beneficiaries to discover and enhance their potentials—this is a manifestation of the presence of the Holy Spirit moving believers to renew the face of the earth (See Psalm 104:30). The Spirit indeed is empowering (Ruach and Pneuma, the Hebrew and Greek for Spirit also connote power). It was the Spirit that embraced St. Paul and St. Hannibal. It is the same Spirit that embraces SHEC staff and beneficiaries as they promote the Kingdom of God.

Meeting with SHFC. In a meeting with the officers of SHFC (Social Housing Finance Corp) last July 5, 2011, SHEC admin sought to clarify matters regarding loans. The meeting was attended by Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ, George Espin, Sandy Giolagon and Benchu Zabala, Ana Oliveros, VP Moon, Jo Banglagan, Atty. Janice Palisoc, Engr. Fel Gilbang, Noemi Henon and Cecil Tan.

ROGATE: Following in the footsteps of St. Hannibal and St. Anthony. June 1 is the feast of St. Hannibal. June, also, is the month of St. Anthony’s feast. The saint of Padua had always occupied a significant place in St. Hannibal’s heart, because St. Anthony’s ‘Bread of the Poor’ had been a devotion of sharing for the benefit of the orphans under St. Hannibal’s care.

The orphans (together with the widows) in Biblical times represented the poorest of the poor whom Jesus loved so much. St. Anthony’s and St. Hannibal’s passion to serve the poorest constitutes an unbroken Biblical-Christian tradition which SHEC continues today.

Passion to serve the poor! Continuing Jesus’ Kingdom works! Following in the footsteps of Sts. Anthony and Hannibal!—these propel SHEC’s Kingdom workers to spread the good news this month of June.

Happy Feastday, St. Hannibal! SHEC is an institution for the poor because it continues the spirituality of St. Hannibal. In honor of the saint, the Holy Eucharist was offered last June 1, 2011 at the St. Hannibal Subdivision, Phase II, Rodriguez St., Malibay, Pasay City. The celebration was indeed a eucharistia or jubilant thanksgiving for the gifts of St. Hannibal and of SHEC for the flourishing of God’s Kingdom.

Community Organizing, Kingdom Building. Jesus preached a kingdom where people could learn to form communities of love, peace, justice and sharing. This, needless to say, is the essence of being Church, of being the one family of God. Perpetuating this tradition, SHEC provided a two day community organizing seminar for 43 leaders of SHaCC and PABaNAL. Said seminar was held at the St. Hannibal Training Center last June 22 and 23, 2011. It was facilitated by Lari Angelo Dalit and Ms Nancy Nicolas. The participants had their graduation last June 30, 2011.

Comprehensive Shelter Planning. SHEC participated in the two day comprehensive shelter planning held at the Carlos Pizza Restaurant, Malate Manila last June 28 and 29, 2011. The event was attended by the following: Offices of the Mayor and of the Representative, Vice Mayor’s office, Hon. Advincula’s office, City Legal, Planning and Development office, Engineering, Social Welfare, UPAO, Assessor’s office, Brgy. Action Center and Information offices, DILG, NHA, PCUP, Caritas, OLSOFI and SHEC.

May Highlights

ROGATE: Serving God and his people, especially the poor, through Mary. May is the month of flowers. In the Philippines, the May Flower Festival is usually celebrated in honor of the Virgin Mary. Noteworthy to mention is the special place of Mary in the life of St. Hannibal. It was Mary who led St. Hannibal to love Jesus, and eventually to love the poor whom Jesus loves so much—his favorites, so to say. When he was 17, St. Hannibal wrote these lines of a poem about Mary, titled “To Jesus through Mary”:

In the blossoming of my years,

I looked for you, shedding tears;

Kneeling at your holy knee,

May I find whom I want to love through thee!

And the young Hannibal was led to love Jesus, who eventually led him to give special love and concern for the poor in his ministry.

This Marian spirituality that brings justice to the poor, needless to say, guides the life of SHEC, especially in the month of May.

Health Survey Seminar at Baseco.

Last May 25, 2011, SHaCC health workers, Nelia Reyna, Nelyn, Crisly, Malou and Chris, assisted by 10 Pabanal leaders, facilitated a seminar on health survey at the Most Holy Chapel, Blk 9 New Site, Baseco. Truly, this program is a great help for the welfare of the poor communities at Baseco.

Happy Birthday, Fr. Arlene.The birth of a Kingdom apostle is truly an occasion of jubilation, of praising and thanking God for the blessing of sending a holy laborer in his vineyard. Such indeed was the atmosphere of SHEC as the Rogationist fathers, staff, SHaCC, Pabanal as well as the family and friends of Fr. Arlene Gumangan, RCJ joined him in his birthday celebration last May 27, 2011 at the SHEC Training Center. Happy birthday, Fr. Arlene! May you have more blessings in your life, and more life to enjoy your blessings—and, of course, a long life dedicated and committed to serve the poor.

Gabi ng Kabataan in Honor of St. Hannibal.

To celebrate the feast day of St. Hannibal, the leaders and members of ROGATE Youth Ministry, SHaCC, Pabanal and Merville Chapters, as well as the SHEC Youth volunteers and the leaders and members of St. Hannibal Christian Community showcased their talents in a program dubbed “Gabi ng Kabataan”. The affair was also meant to thank the youth volunteers. The joyful event was held at the St. Hannibal Subdivision Phase 2, Rodriguez St., Malibay, Pasay City last May 31, 2011.

ROGATE: Inward Moments, Outward Movements For Human and Cosmic Salvation. April 2011 is very special because on it falls the date of Easter. The resurrection of Jesus is God’s way of saying that not even death can hinder the growth of his Kingdom. Death is the ultimate expression of evil. Social injustice (mass poverty and oppression)results in death. Ecological imbalance as wellleads to death. But God has promised a new creation (see 2 Pt 3:13) where he will reign and dwell with humanity forever (see Rev 21:1-5)—this is a picture of God’s-Kingdom-of Human-and-Cosmic-Salvation for which St. Hannibal begs God to send laborers. But the Rogate is more than closed eyes, clasped hands and bended knees. It ought to result in feet that tread the slums, in eyes that probe and seek solutions to the roots of social injustice and ecological problems, in hands that join to work for integral development, in arms that embrace the poorest and weakest—this is the essence of SHEC. More than an institution that serves the Kingdom, it is a way of life, a spirituality of inward moments with God in prayer resulting in outward moments for the total well-being of humans and c

reation.

Healthy Bones for a Happy Life

To help the community take care of their health, especially their bones, Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ organized a Free Bone Scanning Session administered by staff from Anlene. 168 community members from SHaCC, PABaNAL, SHEC and neighbors of SHEC office availed of the program which was conducted at St. Hannibal Training Center 584-A E. Cornejo St., Malibay, Pasay City last April 2, 2011. Certainly healthy bones could save one from the pains of arthritis, resulting in a happy lifestyle.

Kingdom Partners Visit SHEC

To know more about SHEC’s identity and mission, SHEC’s partners in regard to Kingdom works namely, PCUP (Presidential Commission on Urban Poor) and UPAO (Urban Poor Assistance Office), Pasay City visited SHEC last April 6, 2011. Part also of the visit was connected to the 25th anniversary of UPAO. Truly, the healthy rapport among kindred spirits redounds to a more dynamic transformation of inhumane conditions.

SHaCC BOD Meets Mayor Calixto

Last April 26, 2011, the Board of Directors of SHaCC presented themselves and their concerns to Mayor Tony G. Calixto who also presented his comments on said concerns. This dialogue, it is hoped, will eventually lead to the progress of the poor communities at Pasay.

SHEC Admin and Staff Find Rest in God’s Embrace

Relating as a family is far better than working as co-employees, more so when it comes to Kingdom work. To strengthen their bond, the SHEC family, Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ; Fr. Orville R. Cajigal, RCJ, Rev. Arlene Gumangan, RCJ, Fr. Chris Sabili, Ramon Espin, Richie Ordoñez, Elmer Bergonia, Jr., Irminia Zabala, Ana Marie Dominguez, Amelie Tegio, Jessa Mae Hagosojos, Abegail Apolong and Irene Bedonia spent quality moments with God and with one another in a recollection-cum-outing at Pagsanjan, Laguna. This wonderful event took place last April 27, 2011.

MARCH 2011 HIGHLIGHTS

God’s wonders never cease! The month of March is indeed a vibrant march towards the Kingdom due to the many blessings bestowed upon SHEC and the poor communities it serves.

Work Plan Finalized.

Meeting under God’s guidance has always been effective. This is so, indeed, as experienced by the group of Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ as they met to finalize their work plan for 2011 in the atmosphere of a recollection held last March 12, 2011 at the St. Hannibal Eco-Retreat Center, Norzagaray Bulacan. The following participated in the activity: Cristy Lingayon, Nelyn Balbalosa, Flora Loreto, Linda Wong, Gemma Ortega, Merlyn Lucabo, Luisa Abanilla, Nila Andrade, Mercy Gerandio, Jocelyn Velasco, Marilou Tatardillo, Denia Lisay and Mary Anne Merelos .

Children’s Ministry Goes Party-Party.

Ministers who are happy with each other’s company could serve better especially amidst taxing Kingdom works. Accordingly, to strengthen their bond as well as to showcase their talents, the members of the Children’s ministry threw a party for the birthday celebrators of the months of January, February and March. The event organized by Ruthelia Valmoria was held last March 1

As they march towards their goal, the fullness of life in the Kingdom of God, the management of SHEC led by Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ and the officers of SHaCC and Pabanal revisited their Kingdom journey in view of planning for more effective programs. The event was held at the Rogationist College, Paranaque City last March 20, 2011.

Happy Birthday, Fr. Orville.

In a celebration which began with the Holy Eucharist, SHEC staff and volunteers rejoiced with Fr. Orville and were one with him in thanking God for the gift of life last March 22, 2011. Indeed, the birth of a dedicated Kingdom apostle is a cause of great jubilation. This grace-filled event took place at the St. Hannibal Training Center.

UN-Habitat and CDIA Visit SHEC.

Last March 23, 2011, George Espin facilitated the orientation and tour of visitors from the UN-Habitat together with the Cities Development Initiative for Asia Incorporated (CDIA) who wanted to know more about SHEC’s housing projects. SHEC’s growing network is indeed a sign that the mustard seed is growing into a big tree. Kudos for marching vibrantly towards the Kingdom!

MyDee Merchandising Donates Livelihood Showcase.

Empowering the poor is a way of letting the poor know and feel that they are dignified. To help SHEC realize this goal, MyDee Merchandising donated a livelihood showcase for SHEC, SHaCC and PABaNAL. The showcase was delivered at the St. Hannibal Training Center last March 30, 2011.

George and Gil Meet With HLURB.

Last March 30, 2011 George Espin and Gil Giolagon had a consultation meeting with authorities of the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board regarding the implementing rules and regulation of RA 9904. The meeting was held at Las Pinas City.

The first fruits of the first month of 2011 are SHEC’s special offering or contribution to the Church’s on-going mission to proclaim the Kingdom of God, especially to the poor and oppressed.

January 11 and January 21 are special, for on these days the first fruits, the first priests of SHEC celebrate their respective birth into the order of the priesthood. January 11 is not only the natal day of Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ (Executive Director) but also his ordination day. Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ (Asst. Executive Director) commemorates his promotion to the Holy Orders on January 21. Fr. Dex is already 8 years in the priesthood, while Fr. Orville has reached his fifth year as ‘another Christ.’ More power to SHEC’s pioneer Kingdom apostles!

Phase 2 Subdivision In Progress

The work of God can never be stopped. It dynamically unfolds as Kingdom workers continue to work zealously for the well-being of the least. Thanks to the effort of SHEC’s Housing Program under George Espin, the City Council of Pasay has conducted a hearing for the approval of the Subdivision Plan of Phase 2 last January 24, 2011. Truly, this is again an unfolding work of God for his beloved anawim.

Mens Sana in Corpore Sano!

‘A healthy mind in a healthy body,’ so goes the Latin saying. This axiom tells sharply that the Kingdom of God is very much concerned with the total person (body-and-soul), and not the soul only. To promote care for the body, twenty one leaders of SHaCC attended a training on Qigong Exercises last January 25-26, 2011. Held at the St. Hannibal Training Center, the purpose of the seminar was to train the leaders so they can lead their constituents during morning exercises. The event was facilitated by Dr. Karlo Pedro, Dr. Jon Paolo Pineda and Dr. Mario Prado.

Happy Foundation Day, SHEC, SHaCC and PABaNAL!

Last January 30, 2011, the first month ended to commemorate the ‘birthday’ or foundation day of SHEC, SHaCC and PABaNAL at the covered court of Brgy. Baseco Port Area, Manila. It was indeed a cause for rejoicing since the communities have continued to manifest that the Kingdom of God is growing, from a small mustard seed into a robust tree where the needy may find comfort and shelter. SHEC welcomes December 2010 with renewed faith and hope with Jesus whose Kingdom mission SHEC shares and continues. Jesus was born for this mission (see ), and so was SHEC. Christmas then takes a most profound meaning once it is seen in the context of the Kingdom of God; and this is what SHEC strives to proclaim, especially with the least, the anawim whom God loves in a very special way. Indeed, God’s wonders never cease! He can never be outdone in generosity. And truly, December has witnessed the outpouring of blessings upon SHEC.

December 20 double treat: Eco-Retreat Center and Almost Heaven Retreat Center.

Last December 20, 2010, the deed of donation for the Eco-Retreat Center at Sitio Maramo, San Mateo, Bulacan was signed by Captain Benhur Gomez.

At the same day, the deed of donation for the Almost Heaven Retreat Center at Banaue, Ifugao was signed by Hon. And Mrs. Gualberto Lumauig. For both deeds of donation, the Rogationists were represented by Father General Angelo Mezzari, Vicar General Fr. Bruno Rampazzo, Fr. Jessie Martirizar, Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, Fr. Orville cajigal and Rev. Arlene Gumangan.

The Rogationist fathers afterwards paid a visit to His Eminence Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales.

Musical play for the Kingdom.

To proclaim the essence of Christmas, and to raise funds for the empowerment of the poor, the Essentials Choir of SHEC showcased their multiple talents in a musical play which portrayed Kingdom values as contextualized in the general setting of today’s Filipino families. The successful project was shown at Aritao, Nueva Viscaya last December 29, 2010. The play was written and directed by Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ and. The actors/singers were Lynly Lacdang, Evangeline Lacdang, Richard Domanico, Mikki Macabenta and the Members of Essentials Choir.

It’s November—a time to celebrate our hope for the second coming of Christ the King. He will finally establish the Kingdom of God, especially among the poor and oppressed, for whom Jesus will return as the Son of Man who would restore peace and justice (see Mt 25:31-46). It also marks the end of the liturgical year. Accordingly, it is a moment to thank God for many blessings, especially the steps (big and small) we’ve made towards the realization of the Kingdom.

Last November 6, 2010, the Rogationist family and SHEC have been blessed with the diaconate ordination of Rev. Arlene Ordinario Gumangan, RCJ. Truly, Reverend Arlene’s elevation to the holy orders is an expression of his commitment to serve God and the Church, particularly in promoting the Kingdom of God to the poor and oppressed. The joyful and blessed event took place at Don Jose Green Court, San Dionisio, Sucat Parañaque City.

TAO-Pilipinas and Japanese researchers visit SHEC.

In view of improving their services for the poor, TAO-Pilipinas, t

ogether with Japanese researchers led by Mr. Takuya Ogawa and Architect Etsuzo Inamoto, paid a visit and conducted an orientation on SHEC programs at SHEC office, phase 2 site last November 9, 2010. The visit/orientation was facilitated by George Espin.

UP medical studes facilitate first aid training.

Some medical students of the University of the Philippines (UP) who are assigned at SHaCC (St. Hannibal Christian Communities), in coordination with Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ, conducted a first aid training among SHaCC committee leaders and youth sports members. This re-appropriation of the healing ministry of Jesus was carried out last November 9-10, 2010.

Parents of Rogate youth spend quality time with the Lord.

Last November 29, 2010, the parents of the Rogate youth who handle the children’s ministry had a meaningful recollection at the St. Hannibal Training Center. Evangelization always starts and takes roots in the family, which is why an on-going spiritual and values formation for parents is an indispensable aspect of Kingdom work. The event was facilitated by Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ.

October is the month of Mary, mother of the poor. This month, with the Blessed Mother’s intercession, the poor of SHEC have been showered again with many blessings. Accordingly, they celebrate and thank God by singing with Mary her magnificat (Lk 1:47-53):

“My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty.

Community Assembles for Housing Concerns. It is the goal of SHEC to help people build decent homes. This dream is again a step closer to realization in the community of Phase 3. Last October 9, 2010, they gathered for the purpose of learning about the PIAC (Project Inter-Agency Committee) housing program and pertinent information like the history of presidential proclamation 1225. The assembly was organized by Bro. George Espin of SHEC.

Italians Visit SHEC Communities. The communities of SHEC Pasay and Baseco were visited last October 18, 2010 by Fr. Gabriel Flores and some Italian nationals. The visit was an opportune moment to link with people who could help SHEC realize its Kingdom mission among the urban poor.

Massage Students Graduate. After going through the hurdles as well as joys of learning the art of massaging, the students of Brgy. 144, Pasay City graduated last October 28, 2010. Equipped with new this new skill, the graduates will have better opportunities to augment their income. The graduation was organized by Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ.

Congratulations to the Winners! The much awaited raffle draw has finally come last October 30, 2010. The winners were indeed joyful and lucky. But more important, the raffle beneficiaries have much to thank God for. Ultimately, they are the lucky and joyful ones, for once again, they have felt the blessings of the Kingdom through the generosity and kindness of their brothers and sisters. So with yourselves; since you are eager for spiritual gifts, strive to excel in them for building up the church (1 Cor 14:12).

SHEC is an avenue within which Kingdom workers exercise their various gifts to build up the Church or the People of God, especially the poor and the oppressed. Doing so, brothers and sisters show not only their being images of God, but also their unity amidst their diversity.

SHEC is St. Vincent Awardee. For its giftedness in empowering the poor to realize their potentials in order to have a more humane life, SHEC received a plaque of honor given by the St. Vincent Award Committee in a program held at the Adamson University, San Marcelino St., Manila. The memorable event was attended by Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ, SHEC Staff, volunteers and SHaCC leaders.

Theater Workshop Conducted. To strengthen their bond and to enhance their talents in acting, the Rogate Youth SHaCC Chapter (RYSC) led by Bro. Arlene Gumangan attended a theater workshop which was facilitated by Kai Hernandez. The activity was organized by Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ. It was held last August 1, 2010 at the St. Hannibal Training Center, 584-A E. Cornejo St., Malibay, Pasay City.

New Priests Celebrate Thanksgiving Mass. SHEC was indeed graced last September 9, 2010 because of the presence of three newly ordained priests, Fr. Herbert, Fr. Jeffrey and Fr. Noel, who celebrated a mass in gratitude to God for the gift of the priesthood. More priests like Jesus would mean more workers to promote the Kingdom and its justice.

ACISCA Visits SHEC. Participants of the Seminar of the Association of Christian Institute of Social Concerns of Asia (ACISCA) visited SHEC last September 11, 2010. Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ, SHEC assistant executive director, presented the spirituality, nature, dynamics and services of SHEC to the visitors. It is really a heartwarming event when Kingdom workers of different places come together to share their gifts for the promotion of the mission of Jesus.

SHEC Conducts Trainings. Helping the poor is empowering them to live fully by using their gifts. One way to do this is to train them to have a decent means of livelihood. Accordingly, last September 6-9 and 13-17, 2010. Ms.Jessica Rosello trained Juana Sarmiento, Ma. Cristina Javier, Hilda Peregrino, Daisy Mamza, Alma Borongan, Edita Baluyot, Nelia Ballon, Iluminada Ebuenga, Heidi Correda, Anita Francisco and Veronica Banzuela. Also, last September 14-18, 2010, some members of the SHaCC Health Committee were equipped with basic knowledge and skills in basic health education. This trainers’ training was facilitated by Dr. Armando Balasbas, Dr. Denise Nicole Baquiran, Dr. Manuel Miguel Barnes, Dr. Angelica Barrenechea and Dr.Ray Anthony Bartolome.

Rested, Refreshed, Re-energized. September 12, 2010 was a Spirit-filled moment for SHEC Phase II committee heads (BOT) to rest in God through a recollection in Norzagaray, Bulacan. Refreshed and Re-energized, the leaders would be ready again to continue the Kingdom works they have been gifted to carry out. The recollection was facilitated by Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ.

SHEC Goes Ecological For July 2010

Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made… (Rom 1:20).

Creation, indeed, has a face. It is one of God’s many faces, for it manifests God’s goodness. Creation then has a dignity which demands respect and care. The whole month of July was especially dedicated by SHEC for the development of Bulacan Ecofarm. This is one way of proclaiming the Kingdom whose spirituality, needless to say, among others, is essentially an ecological spirituality.

Ecological spirituality is a spirituality of interconnectedness. Yes, all are interconnected in one home, God’s creation (ecology, by the way, comes from the Greek oikos, meaning house). We belong to one house, and what happens in one affects the rest. One needs the other as the other needs the one. Humans need trees, just as trees need humans. Planting trees therefore is preservation of life—not of only human life, but of earth life in general. SHEC has once again contributed to this noble effort to preserve life through a series of tree planting last July 13, 18, 20 and 24. Richie Ordonez led the activities. With Pabanal, SHaCC and youth members, they planted papaya and mahogany.

Buy Raffle Tickets to Help Poor Families

To bring Good News to the poor and oppressed -- this was Jesus’ mission, the very reason why he was sent (Cf. Lk 4:18, 43). It is also the very reason why the Rogationists of the Heart of Jesus established the St. Hannibal Empowerment Center, Inc. (SHEC) which strives to continue Jesus’ mission by empowering the poor through an integral and holistic program comprising education, housing, livelihood, youth formation, ecology, justice and peace and values formation. To date, SHEC has already awarded 390 housing units to the poor families of Pasay City. The success of the program inspired His Eminence Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, DD to initiate the establishment of SHEC at Baseco, Tondo. The Cardinal also actively supports the programs of SHEC through his Pondo ng Pinoy Foundation.

At present, SHEC is working for the sales of raffle tickets to augment the livelihood capital of the poor families. Suffering from loss of jobs because of the economic crisis which has been worsened by recent calamities, they have to strengthen and sustain their livelihood projects in order to meet their basic needs, most especially the amortization of their houses. We appeal to your generosity to help our poor Filipino brothers and sisters by buying their raffle tickets. In so doing, you can emulate the first Christians who saw to it that no one among them was poor because they generously shared their resources (Cf. Acts 2:43-47). Also, radical sharing with the poor and needy is a clearly spelled-out criterion for salvation (Cf. Mk 10:17-27; Mt 25:31-46). May God reward your generosity with abundant blessings!

SHEC June 2010 Highlights

June usually marks the start of the rainy season. While God's blessings pour like rain on all, we ought to keep in mind that the poor and oppressed have a special place in God's compassionate heart. It is mainly for them in fact that Jesus preached the Kingdom and its Good News to the poor (see Mk 1:14-15; Lk 4:16-21). And the challenge of Jesus for those who get very wet with God's downpour of blessings is to share their resources with the less fortunate. This, needless to say, is an indispensable criterion for salvation (see Mk 10:17-27; Mt. 25:31-46; Acts 2:43-47).

Refreshed and Energized

Jesus often retired to quiet, deserted places in order to connect to his Father in prayer. In doing so, he was always energized and refreshed. As a result, he tirelessly proclaimed the Kingdom of God, energizing and refreshing people,

especially the poor and oppressed. As followers of Jesus, the Kingdom workers of SHEC (administration and staff) energized themselves through a r

ecollection held at Virgoni Resort, Pulilan, Bulacan last June 3, 2010. Spirit-filled and Spirit-driven as ever, the zealous apostles to the margins returned to the slums to continue working for God’s compassion and justice. The recollection was organized by Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ.

SWM Seminar for Healthy Creation

One of the key solutions to our worsening ecological cris

is is authentic care for creation through the observance of eco-friendly practices. This is not a mere response to a passing problem. It should rather be a way of life, for salvation after all is not only for humans but for creation as well. Kingdom practice then necessarily includes ecological advocacy. Accordingly, Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ, environment committee head, organized a series of Solid Waste Management Seminar (SWM) for Phase 3 members last June 5 and 12 respectively at SHEC Training Center.

Building Communities Through Sports

Full of the energies proper to youngsters, the Rogate Youth SHEC chapter (comprised of the youth from Baseco and Pasay) showcased their skills and talents during the sports festival which was held at the Green Court last June 18, 2010. Thanks to the organizer, Bro. Jonathan Medalla, the successful affair contributed much to the bonding and growth in camaraderie among SHEC youth.

SHEC May 2010 Highlights

May is a month when flowers of rare beauty bloom. In the perspective of faith, routine and ordinary events could be flowers of rare beauty manifesting God’s blessing-filled acts of justice, compassion and liberation. God’s wonders indeed never cease, and they are here to stay so long as there are zealous Kingdom workers (see Mt 10:5-7).

Voters’ Education for Phases 2 and 3
May 3, 2010 was a busy day for Ma. Victoria Infante and some Rogate Youth members who facilitated a Voters’ Education for residents of Phases 2 and 3 at Barangay 184, Cornejo, Malibay. Truly, God is the Lord of all, and his justice continues to shape politics through modern day prophets.

Urban Gardening for Healthy Ecology
Healthy creation is a part of total salvation (see Rom 8:21). Accordingly, on May 13, 2010 the Solid Waste Management leaders of Phase 2 established a partnership with TAO Pilipinas regarding environment projects, particularly on urban gardening.

Team-Building for Rogate Youth
The Kingdom of God is about fellowship of persons forming a family of love and friendship (see Mt 22:2-9). To deepen and strengthen this value of the Kingdom among the Rogate Youth, a team-building activity facilitated by Ma. Victoria Infante was held last May 22-23, 2010 at San Rafael, Bulacan. United amidst their diversity, the youth hopefully would grow in number, making thus the fellowship of God’s children alive and dynamic.

SHEC Baseco: Another Blessing to the Poor
The work of God is truly unstoppable, and his Kingdom remains the goal we strongly work, wait and hope for (see 2 Pt 3:13). The blessing of SHEC Baseco Office last May 30, 2010 at block 6, old site, Baseco is a manifestation that the Kingdom will surely grow into a robust mustard tree under which the poor and oppressed may find justice and liberation (see Mt 13:31-32). The affair was graced with the presence of Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales and Fr. Bruno Rampazzo, RCJ.

Two-fold Celebration of St. Hannibal’s Feast
The month ended with a two-fold celebration: The Staff and Collaborators’ Night as well as the Youth Night. These special nights were dedicated to St. Hannibal whose feast falls on the 31st of May.
Learning could be fun, for the Kingdom is also about laughter and joy (see Mt 6:21). The meaningful night with the youth was fun-filled as they learned more about St. Hannibal. The hope of the nation and the church showed the influence of St. Hannibal in their lives through their talents. The neophytes among them enjoyed watching while they learned about St. Hannibal’s life and teachings. The celebration was successful, thanks to the initiative of Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ.

On the other hand, through the leadership of Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ, the staff and collaborators of SHEC celebrated their own night in which the renovated office and organic farm at Cornejo and were blessed, the graduation of farm managers was conducted, and the plans for SHEC Bulacan, Banaue and phase 3 housing were presented.

ROGATE YOUTH EVENTS

A general assembly for the Rogate Youth-SHaCC was held on April 11, 2010 at the SHEC office in Cornejo. The energetic young people were jubilant over the opportunity to discover their talents, and to showcase the same. The occasion also served as an avenue for peer encouragement and edification. Ms. Ma. Victoria Infante was overall coordinator for this event.

On April 18, 2010 another gathering was conducted, this time to inculcate the value of awareness and involvement in social issues affecting the youth. Held at the SHEC office and facilitated by Ms. Ruth Valmoria, the training promoted youth participation and active dialogue. It also improved the confidence of participants to voice out their informed opinions and critical analysis on both local and national issues.

As a preparatory activity to the RY-SHEC Camp, a pre-camp orientation was conducted on April 22 to 23 at the SHEC office in Cornejo. Here the vision, mission, and programs of SHEC were revisited. A call to unity among the RY-SHEC was also posed as a challenge, which the youth willingly accepted. This activity was facilitated by Fr. Dexter Prudenciano and Fr. Orville Cajigal with support from Ma. Victoria Infante, Thanvi Medalla, and the Farm Managers.

The RY-SHEC National Camp and National Day of Prayer was held on April 24 and 25 at Merville Seminary. On top of the camaraderie that was fostered, a national structure for the Rogate Youth emerged. The Youth Ministry and Values Formation departments teamed up to make this a successful reality.

SHEC PABaNAL OUTING

Leaders in the community also experienced a much-deserved time for fun and relaxation. On April 16, 2010 PABaNAL leaders and members enjoyed a day trip to the hot springs capital of the country in Pansol, Laguna. It was a much-appreciated time for bonding among PABaNAL leaders and members, as Fr. Christopher Sabili and Thanvi Medalla facilitated the reflection, sharing, and evaluation activities related to the PABaNAL organization’s accomplishments over the past year.

VOTERS’ EDUCATION
The first run of SHEC’s Voters’ Education campaign was conducted on Aril 19 at the SHEC office. The facilitators tackled the what’s, why’s, who’s, and when’s of the then upcoming national election. Particularly, the automated system was introduced and discussed so that the spread of unnecessary fears and misconceptions would be prevented. Guidelines for choosing leaders of both competence and character were also discussed. Participants came out of the seminar assured of an election that can work with their participation and support.

Summer is here! Amidst the sweltering heat, SHEC continues to be fired up for service in the mission field. Truly, no hardship can hinder Kingdom workers to be poured out in mission for total human and cosmic salvation. For, needless to say, not even the fires of hell (of which we are reminded because of global warming) will prevail over the community that Jesus inspired and empowered (Mt 16:18).

Here are some highlights from the major ministry activities:
Community Organizing
Under the guidance of BASECO Community Organizer Fr. Christopher Sabili, PABaNAL leaders and members received three (3) strategic trainings that will enable them to effectively continue relevant and meaningful development projects in the community.

One distinctive mark of Kingdom communities is their radical and equitable sharing of resources in which the rich are challenged to distribute their wealth to the poor (see Mk 10:17-27; Acts 2 43-47). A contemporary way of re-appropriating the spirit of communion of the first Kingdom communities is to design empowerment programs for the poor, on the one hand, and to request the rich to finance the programs, on the other hand. Accordingly, the first training is on project management and grant proposal preparation conducted on March 5 at the De Gracia Chapel in Block 1, Gasangan. Resource speaker Jonathan Medalla facilitated the session by revisiting the PABaNAL vision and mission statements.

In keeping with the central advocacy of the Kingdom which is the promotion of good news to the poor or justice and liberation (Lk 4:18-19) the second workshop focused on Human Rights (HR) awareness which was facilitated by Commission on Human Rights staff Atty. Name Mosqueda with the assistance of Mr. Caloy Sabile and Jonathan Medalla. 70 participants from 18 phases joined the activity, aimed at developing the self-confidence of each one on legal processes, assertion of rights as a people’s organization in the areas of active participation, involvement and consultation. The seminar was conducted on March 6 at the PABaNAL Tent in Gasangan.

The third activity was a paralegal training on the Urban Development Housing Act of 1992, held on March 27 at the De Gracia Chapel. PABaNAL leaders in particular benefited from this training that was conducted by the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor Commissioner, Ed Rancio with the assistance of Ms. Rosy (surname), Mr. Ariel (surname), Mr. Jonathan Medalla, and Fr. Christopher Sabili.

YOUTH
Young people from the SHEC community also received relevant training this onset of summer.

On March 13th, eight (8) Rogate Youth participated in the Ka-Talk forum of the Archdiocese of Manila, dubbed as “Dahil Mahal Kita”, a social awareness program held at the Paco Catholic School in Manila. Youth Ministry head Ms. Ma. Victoria Infante joined the youth in this exciting forum. The moral demand of the Kingdom is conversion (see Mk 1:15), which is also about change of perspectives or paradigms resulting from significant awareness. It is hoped that awareness programs may significantly mold the youth, the hope of the Kingdom.

In keeping with Kingdom spirituality which is also essentially an eco-spirituality, a series of workshop on Solid Waste Management (SWM) was conducted to empower the youth on pro-actively caring for the environment. The sessions were held on March 14 and 28 at the SHEC office in Cornejo. As proof that these trainings indeed help build capacity, the sessions were facilitated by graduates of earlier SWM training courses.

Not to forget spiritual development and connectivity with the Lord, the Source of fresh energy, SHEC youth gathered at the SHEC Office for a day of prayer and reflection on March 21, 2010. This recollection was facilitated by Mr. Jojie Juanero and the Rogate Youth.

Staff And Organizational Development
Summer is not complete without proper rest and recreation activity for the ever-diligent and hardworking Kingdom apostles, the SHEC staff and volunteers. A recollection and outing was therefore organized and held on March 19 and 20 at the famous Balay Isabel in Batangas. SHEC Executive Director Fr. Dex Prudenciano, RCJ was overall person-in-charge for this much-awaited event. The staff and some of their family members enjoyed the varied amenities of the place. Most of all, time of fellowship and worship interspersed the two-day out-of-town trip.

As part of inter-organizational learning, Father Arelio Perez Garcia, Superior of Congregation of the Sons of the Merciful Love, together with Father Bruno Rampazzo and Fr. Miguel (surname) visited SHEC Phase 2 housing sites on March 8, 2010. The visit was a two-way blessing. While the guests learned from SHEC’s housing projects, communities and families also experienced spiritual breakthrough as they were prayed for and given words of affirmation and encouragement by the visiting Fathers.

We love Him, because He first loved us (1 John 4:19).

February is traditionally celebrated as the love month. At SHEC it has been a time full of affection, and not merely of the human kind. God’s love is celebrated and remembered in every activity successfully carried our throughout the four weeks of the month that was. But more important to note is the fact that God’s love or compassion is essentially about justice and liberation for the poor and oppressed. This understanding of God’s love—as feeling partner of justice—is the frame of reference that has guided SHEC through the years.

Love is about celebration and learning. From February 2 to 4, staff sat down for SHEC’s Annual Evaluation and Planning. Executive Director Father Dex Prudenciano, RCJ and Human Resource Head Father Orville Cajigal, RCJ led the staff in a meaningful process of looking back, recognizing accomplishments, revisiting areas of improvement, and drafting plans for the year ahead.

Love is about friendship. A week later, on February 14, a Valentines Party was held for the SHEC Youth. The dancing and interactions promoted warm camaraderie and strengthened bonding among the SHEC Youth volunteers, members of the ROGATE Youth and Kids. Staff from the Youth and Formation Committees organized and facilitated the event. As Jesus himself would show through his disciples, friendships are a major opportunity for showing and experiencing love.

Love is about sharing. February 17 saw the coming of students and professionals from Europe’s Lund University. These guests traversed the far distance to learn more about SHEC’s mission, strategies in community organizing, and the technology it has adopted for its ongoing housing projects. Bro George Espin of the Housing Committee spearheaded the hosting of said visitors.

Love is carrying one another’s burden. When a fire incident ravaged hundreds of homes from De Gracia Phases 1 to 3, Pabanal Leaders of 18 phases in Baseco organized an ad hoc team to manage a relief and rehabilitation effort. On February 18 and 19, these leaders consulted with the local government unit of Baseco, as well as the city government of Manila, to discuss short-term assistance for the fire survivors as well as long term plans involving the development plan of Baseco. Truly, it was on such trying times that love was put in action.

Love is continuous development. The Youth Committee met each Sunday to strengthen its organizational leadership, to continuously hone the interests and talents of its members, and to establish its strategies for community service. Committee Head Ms. Ma Victoria Infante continuously highlights the need for skills development among the youth. The more their personal growth is cultivated, the more they can meaningfully demonstrate Christian servant leadership.

Youth for the Kingdom

January 7-9, 2010 was an opportune moment for the Rogate youth, SHEC chapter as they gathered at Almost Heaven Retreat Center, Banaue, Ifugao to be formed as servant-leaders for the Kingdom mission. Thanks to the energetic facilitators, Fr. Orville Cajigal, Ma. Victoria Infante and the project coordinators, Richie Ordoñez, Almerson Bernardino and Rhoderick Avedaña, the youth camp was successful. Hopefully, the inspired and empowered servant-leaders will sustain their zeal as holy apostles sent to work for integral human and cosmic well-being. Returning home on January 10, the campers were welcomed by fellow Kingdom workers who were then distributing gifts to the fire victims of Pasay.

“Kayo ang Star ng Pasko”

The poor, indeed, are the stars of Christmas. It was for them that Jesus was primarily sent, for the primary blessing of the Good News of the Kingdom of God is its Good News to the poor (Lk 4:18). The poor’s ‘stardom’, so to speak, has been once again made concrete last January 10, 2010 through a late Christmas program for the fire victims of Pasay, thanks to the initiative of Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ and Ma. Victoria Infante.

Holistic Empowerment

A productive livelihood program is an indispensable element of holistic empowerment, for salvation is not total without decent and humane living. Accordingly, SHEC gives due importance to livelihood projects as manifested in the launching of SHEC’s livelihood products at the St. Hannibal Training Center last January 16, 2010. This affair was made successful through the leadership of Sandra Lloret and Irene Borongan.

On Fire

Hearts on fire, figuratively, are hearts that are ready to extend help to the needy, most especially to the poor who are, literally, on fire. SHEC—with a heart always ardent to help—has acted immediately to respond to the plight of 326 families at Baseco whose shacks were razed by fire last January 16, 2010. The site, it seemed, was a ‘hell on earth.’ But with Kingdom workers and sympathizers like Fr. Chris Sabili, SHEC community organizer at Baseco, the Kingdom will surely prevail in the opportune time.

The number 7 is biblically significant. It means wholen ess, much like the overwhelming and complete joy of the SHEC and SHaCC as they celebrated their 7th Foundation Day last January 17, 2010 at the St. Hannibal Homeowners’ Association,

Phase 2. A true way of thanking and praising God for his blessings is to share blessings with those who are most in need, which is why the highlight of the event was a simple gift-giving to the fire victims of Barangays 143 and 144, Pasay City. This remarkable event was led by Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ. On the same day, a relief operation was conducted at Baseco, thanks to the leadership of Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ, Fr. Chris Sabili and the donors of the goods.

Balagbag Architectural Plan Presented
Last Dec. 3, 2009, Arch. Arlene of TAO-Pilipinas, Fr. Dexter, Mr. Sotero Ubaldo, Jean Sarmienta and other HOA officers met for the presentation of the architectural plan for Balagbag. The meeting was held at the SHEC Admin Office, E. Cornejo St., Malibay Pasay City.

Seminar on Herbal Medicines
To teach the SHaCC Barangay Health Workers the technical know-how in the preparation and use of some herbal plants, Dr. Ian Gomez, 3 medical students from University of the Philippines-Phil. Gen. Hospital conducted a seminar on herbal medicine at the St. Hannibal Training Center, 584-A E. Cornejo St. , Malibay, Pasay City.

Lecture and Practicum on Solid Waste Management
For the urban gardening and beautification of SHEC, Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ (environment committee head) with Almerson Bernardino, Richie Ordonez and members of different committees in the community conducted a practicum on solid waste management, segregation, composting and vermiculture last Dec. 4, 2009.

PABANAL Youth Assembly
To start community organizing among Pabanal Youth through spiritual exercises, workshops, sharing and reflections on self identity, family experiences, personal and communal responsibility, Fr. Chris Sabili, Ma. Victoria Infante, Irene Borongan, Ritchie Ordonez and Pabanal youth and servant leaders gathered for integral formation last Dec. 12, 2009.

Christmas Parties and Recollection in a Row
From Dec 20 to Dec 22, 2009, the Kid’s ministry and Rogate youth of SHEC celebrated their Christmas parties, thanks to Ma. Victoria Infante who organized the joyful activities. The Christmas recollection facilitated by Fr. Orville Cajigal ended the December activities. The staff enjoyed a meaningful Christmas vacation afterwards.

SHEC Bacolod
SHEC is truly expanding to promote Kingdom works. Last November 1, 2009 SHEC staff Almerson Bernardino, Richie Ordones and Jeffry Abuan headed by Fr. Dexter Prudenciano visited a farm site at Victoria, Negros Occidental. This site is envisioned to be the location of SHEC Bacolod.

Postulants’ Immersion at Baseco
Rogationist postulants immersed at Baseco last Nov. 14, 2009. They conducted a profile study of the youth which focused on their problems regarding relationships. Also, Ma. Victoria Infante, SHEC youth coordinator facilitated a seminar on the vision-mission of SHEC.

Green City
Part of healthy ecology is the abundance of vegetative life most especially at urban areas. To make the SHEC office a green city, farm managers Almerson Bernardino, Richie Ordoñez and Rhoderick Avedaña started a nursery for an envisioned urban garden. This project was launched last Nov. 15, 2009.

Seminar on Natural Farming
To know more about and acquire skills on natural farming such as fermentation process, organic vegetable gardening, vermicomposting, chicken and hog raising and fish culture, the environment committee headed by Fr. Orville Cajigal participated in a seminar on natural farming last Nov. 16-17, 2009.

TLJ Seminar for Baseco BOT
The Biblical Jesus as written in the book, A Third Look at Jesus (TLJ) is a core foundation of SHEC’s Kingdom mission. All of SHEC’s communities are oriented about the Biblical Jesus. Last Nov. 28, 2009 Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ facilitated the training of PABANAL board of trustees about the Biblical Jesus.

Seminar on Sustainable Food Production
To improve their respective programs on farming and other livelihood projects, Richie Ordoñes, Jeffrey Abuan and Almerson Bernardino of SHEC Eco Farms attended a seminar entitled AgriLINK, FoodLINK, AquaLINK--Sustainable Food Production: Focus on the Filipino Market which was held at the World Trade Center, Metro Manila last October 8, 2009.

Tree Planting at Bulacan
Last October 24, 2009, the SHEC staff headed by Fr. Dexter Prudenciano and Fr. Orville Cajigal together with Rogationist Postulants planted mahogany trees at SHEC, Bulacan. Planting trees is indeed a good way of preserving Mother Earth which is envisioned in the Bible as humanities’ final destiny.

Refreshed and Empowered
After a semester of hard work for the Kingdom, SHEC staff and volunteers sought to be refreshed and empowered through a retreat which was held at Badoc, Ilocos Norte last Oct. 26-30, 2009. The retreat was facilitated by Zacarias G. Damo, Jr. who shared on the forgotten core themes of the Bible, namely justice, history and total salvation.

DOING GOOD AND DOING WELL
SHEC believes on the value of iron sharpening iron (Proverbs 27:17), because ‘doing good’ for the kingdom of God becomes ‘doing better’ in the process. Hence, SHEC always strives for excellence and better ways of doing things. It is with this spirit that the activities for September have been carried out:

The Human Resources Department conducted the Mid-Term Evaluation on September 3, 2009. Staff and volunteers were assessed for their function vis-à-vis the implementation of SHEC’s programs. The activity was facilitated by Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ and Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ at the Delegation House, 24 Calcutta St., Merville Park in Parañaque City.

The Environment Committee continues to promote proper solid waste management to residents of St. Hannibal Subdivision Phase II. A two-day workshop, held on September 4 and 5 at the St. Hannibal Training Center, was handled by SHaCC resource speakers to remind each participants of their role and responsibility as stewards and caretakers of nature.

SHEC participated in the 2nd Asia-Pacific Housing Forum held at the Dusit Thani Manila Hotel from September 7 to 9. The event gave a glimpse of different housing programs of government and private sectors for the benefit of the poor in Asia. Concepts, policies, strategies, disaster management, technologies, and best practices were taken up during the discussions. Delegates are from various sectors: non-government entities, local government units, businessmen, and the academe. This event was co-sponsored by Habitat for Humanity and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The Port Area of Baseco Neighborhood Associations’ League (PABaNAL) hosted the community immersion of nine (9) Architecture students from the University of the Philippines on September 10. The activity started with an orientation on SHEC’s vision, mission, programs and activities, and a presentation on PABaNAL’s community organizing activities. The students will come up with a proposal for Baseco’s Development Plan.

On September 13, a special meeting was conducted by the Justice and Peace Committee for the approval of the proposed management chart and to deliberate on other pending concerns of the committee.

Meanwhile, weekly activities to increase faith and strengthen values were conducted throughout the month. The Education and Youth Committees held Values and Formation Skills Development activities every Sunday for SHEC’s young scholars. Meanwhile, SHaCC leaders facilitated Prayer Encounters each Friday of the month for the benefit of its members.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE
In each Sunday of the month, values formation and skills development sessions are offered to the youth, especially to SHEC scholars. The weekly gathering continuously provides young people with guidance, encouragement, and monitoring on their personal and academic development. Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ facilitates the activities at the St. Hannibal Training Center in Pasay City, with the help of youth coordinator Ma. Victoria Infante.

HOUSING COMMITTEE
On August 6, 2009 a survey of the National Housing Authority (NHA) property in Balagbag Site was conducted to define its boundaries and right of way. Witnesses were the barangay chairman and his council, Mr. John Nadua of UPAO (Urban Poor Assistant Office ), Mr. Al and Mr. Noel of the Manila International Airport Administration (MIAA), Engineer Mon Salvador and Engineer Cortez of the NHA, and SHEC Housing Committee head, Ramon Espin.

ECO-FARM COMMITTEE
The topographical map of SHEC’s future eco-farm was joyfully presented by Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) representatives Dr. Gani Urriza and Engineer Mamerto Martinez on August 12, 2009. The map was a result of months of painstaking efforts and visits of the BSWM team to the site in Norzagaray, Bulacan. SHEC Executive Director Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ, and Eco-farm Coordinator Jeffrey Abuan gladly received the comprehensive plan in behalf of SHEC. Engineer Vicente Toto Bañares and Richie OrnoñeZ were also present in the meeting held at the DENR compound in Visayas Avenue, Quezon City. With the map, SHEC is ready to proceed with the preparation stage of the planned eco-farm.

VALUES COMMITTEE
Another opportunity for people to enhance their relationship with God was the 3-day Life in The Spirit Seminar held on August 14 to 16 at the St. Hannibal Subdivision Phase II, Rodriguez Street, Malibay in Pasay City. Father Orville Cajigal, RCJ and the Ilaw in Panginoon Charismatic Community spearheaded the seminar which had as participants the Values Committee members and some SHaCC representatives.

COMMUNITY ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
The Port Area of Baseco Neighborhood Associations’ League (PABaNAL) shared their experiences in community organizing in a meeting with barangay officials on August 15 at the Barangay Baseco Covert Court, Port Area, Manila. PABaNAL leaders told their stories of immersion, mapping, visioning, SEC and BIR registration, agency visits, as well as their present situation. In so doing they were able to gain the support of the council, including Barangay Chairman Kristo Hispano, Kagawad Rey Campanera and other officials. Father Christopher Sabili, Baseco community organizer served as the adviser to this event.

HEALTH COMMITTEE
Beneficiaries of the Feeding Program were successfully nourished back to health and cheerfully graduated from the program on August 19th. Blessings and thanksgiving were pronounced to benefactors who generously shared their resources, to the Health Committee members who implemented the program, and to parents and community leaders who cooperated and contributed to the triumphant ending of the project. Father Fernando Suarez and his team from the Mary Mother of the Poor Foundation graced the occasion.

ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE
Residents of St. Hannibal Subdivision Phase II joined a one-day Environmental Awareness Program conducted by the UP One Earth on August 21 in Malibay, Pasay City. Participants became more aware of the situation of Mother Earth, and as a personal action plan, everybody was encouraged to take care of nature.

YOUTH COMMITTEE
The month ended on August 30 with an inspiring Youth Formation activity focusing on Citizenship on Good Example. Brother Sherwin Santos, a youth himself, lectured on the topic of becoming responsible citizens.

ALMOST HEAVEN IS ALMOST HERE!
The SHEC community celebrated a ground-breaking ceremony at the future site of the envisioned Almost Heaven Retreat Center in Awan Igid, Viewpoint, Banawe. On September 20, 2009 Father Orville Cajigal led the jubilant crowd of SHEC staff, volunteers, priests, local government officials and local residents in thanking the Lord for this gift of land. The donors themselves, Hon. And Mrs. Gualberto Lumauig and Family, graced the occasion. Also present were Barangay captain Robert Hangdaan, Father Bruno Rampazzo, RCJ, Banaue parish priest Father Francis Balaquit, SHEC Executive Director Father Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ, and Banaue Mayor Lino A. Madchiw.

MARIAN AND KINGDOM SONGS – A MUSIC CD LAUNCH
Aleluya and Amen are not only words of worship, faith and justice. They are also titles of inspiring songs—among other titles—written, arranged, and performed by SHEC artists. The CD titled, ‘Ang Kaharian ng Dios, Maria Ina ng Mahihirap’ (The Kingdom of God, Mary Mother of the Poor—containing 20 original compositions about Jesus’ mission of justice and liberation for the poor and the oppressed and Mary’s role in this mission—was launched on July 12, 2009 at the MonteMaria Tent in Barangay Pagkilatan, Batangas City. Father Fernando Suarez and company graciously hosted the simple yet joyous event. SHEC staff, volunteers, and representatives from SHaCC and Pabanal were also present to dedicate these uplifting melodies to God. Father Dex Prudenciano, RCJ, spearheaded this music project. Joining him in the team of composers, singers and musicians were Lynly and Evangeline Lacdang, Noel Espenida, Richard Domanico, Jake Metin, and Jeff Shannon, CC.

LEGAL ADVICE ON HOUSING COMMUNICATIONS
Also on July 12th, the Housing Committee led by Ramon Espin, visited the Social Housing Finance Corporation in Makati City to seek advice on delinquent SHEC beneficiaries. SHFC Legal Department Head Atty. Del Rosario has assured SHEC that letters personally-handed to these beneficiaries (as distinguished from registered mails) are considered valid. This was relieving news, assuring SHEC officers of the legitimacy of their actions.

PABANAL SECRETARIES’ TRAINING
To enhance the support services to housing beneficiaries, 14 Pabanal Phase Secretaries participated and successfully completed the 1st Training Module on Basic Computer Literacy held on July 25, 2009. SHaCC Trainers who facilitated the sessions were Robina Ong, Jocelyn Santajo, Josmar Sullano, and Eden Bathan. Baseco community organizer Fr. Christopher Sabili was in charge of the overall program. SHEC is truly a breeding ground of empowerment and learning, for which God has to be praised and thanked.

ST. HANNIBAL FIESTA
SHEC started the month by celebrating the feast of St. Hannibal Mary di Francia on June 1st. Our beloved patron is the authentic forerunner and zealous master of the modern pastoral care for vocations. The joyful observance was held at the St. Hannibal Subdivision Phase 2 and led by Youth coordinator Ma. Victoria Infante. Participating were the SHaCC, the SHEC staff, and the youth, who all enjoyed the delectable fare and community games.

It was a time of remembering St. Hannibal’s motivation for service: seeing Jesus Christ in the poor and marginalized people. In keeping with the saint’s footsteps, the SHEC community is here to continually "ask [rogate] the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers to gather his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2) so that more people can enjoy the Divine promise of a full life.

UPDATES ON HOUSING PROJECTS
For the rest of June, various consultation activities were conducted to sustain various developments in our housing projects.

On June 1st, a meeting was held at the National Housing Authority office in Mayaman St., UP Village, Quezon City to discuss the overall plan of NHA in relation to SHEC’s Housing Project Phase 3, and to identify boundaries of NHA property against that of the Manila International Airport Administration’s.
Present were TAO-Pilipinas Architect Arlene Lusterio, NHA’s Engineer Bing Natino, and SHEC’s Housing Committee Officer Ramon Espin.

On June 16th the Port Area of Baseco Neighborhood Associations’ League (PABaNAL) presented its Vision, Mission, and Programs to Mayor Alfredo S. Lima and the City Government of Manila. In this meeting held at the 2nd floor, Bulwagan Auditorium of the Manila City Hall, 150 PABaNAL leaders and members participated. Also present were Ms. Vicky Clavel, Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ, and Baseco Community Organizer Fr. Christopher Sabili, OSJ. Other matters discussed were the status of Baseco and the implementation of Presidential Decree No. 145

The month concluded with yet another gathering, this time involving the NHA, PCUP, MIAA, Caritas, HUDCC, and HomeOwners Association. This June 30 meeting was held at the Manila International Airport Administration office on Multinational Avenue, Pasay City.

SHEC upholds trusting in the Lord with our whole heart, and leaning not in our own understanding. The Book of Proverbs reminds us that acknowledging God in all our ways does not only straighten our path. Revering Him with fear also brings “health to our body and nourishment to our bones” (2:5-8). And in the prophetic tradition, fear of the Lord ought to be concretized through the practice of social justice. Failure to do so is something which God hates, no matter how grandiose, pompous and well-prepared our liturgy is (see Is 1:11ff).
For the month of May, the SHEC community sought the revitalizing wisdom of the Lord through various gatherings: celebration, recollection, training, and learning visits. These, hopefully, have equipped the staff and volunteers with the know-how that enhances Kingdom spirituality.

Feeding and Birthday Celebration. The visit of Father Fernando Suarez and some members of the Mary Mother of the Poor Foundation to St. Hannibal Subdivision Phase II on May 15 was extraordinary. It was a treat to partners of the Feeding program: the beneficiaries, the St. Hannibal Christian Community (SHaCC) Barangay Health Workers, some youth volunteers, and community leaders. Over a hearty lunch and cheerful fellowship—a reliving of the Christian life in Acts 2:43-47, perhaps. Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ, coordinated the event as head of the Health Program.

Staff Recollection and Outing.
The following day, all SHEC staff participated in a recollection and an outing held in Tagaytay and Batangas. This is part of the institution’s program for staff development. Fr. Orville Cajigal, RCJ, facilitated the much-awaited retreat, which resulted in a personal revival of each staff’s dedication to the Lord’s ministry to the poor. The periodic conduct of such retreats helps the SHEC team to be more effective as they make time for reflection, before facing another round of action.

Leadership Training.
Community leaders, considered front-liners in SHEC’s ministry, also received relevant and timely leadership training this month. On May 26, a total of 120 leaders of the Port Area of Baseco Neighborhood Associations’ League (PABaNAL), 30 key movers of SHaCC and representatives from the SHaCC youth and choir, participated in a one-day event held at St. Anthony’s Boys Village in Silang, Cavite. Participants were able to share and learn from each other’s experience on the community organizing process, particularly related to SHEC’s various programs such as values formation, housing, and savings mobilization.
Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ, facilitated the training with focus on the themes A Third Look at Jesus and Discovery of the Self. The training was coordinated by Baseco Community Organizer Fr. Christopher Sabili.

Learning Visits.
Two major activities this month contribute to the continuous advancement of the housing projects.
First: The Housing Committee, under the vibrant leadership of Bro. Ramon Espin, consulted with Atty. Jake Luna to discuss the following: a) status of Phase 2 Project and b) individual cases of delinquent beneficiaries. The meeting enabled the committee to draw up action points to further advance the project despite setbacks. Officers in attendance were Noeme Henon, Jocelyn Satajo, Imelda Dongaol., Josefa Tegerero., Cristina Caillo., Celia Tan, Cecilia Felicilda., and Arlene Dungka. The consultation meeting took place on May 29 at the Atty. Jake Luna Law Office in Evangelista Cor. Dallas St., Makati City.

Second: On May 30, the Homeowners Association (HOA) officers visited the project site of the Foundation for the Development of the Urban Poor (FDUP) in Kawit, Cavite. Together with representatives from SHEC partner TAO-Pilipinas, the Housing Committee and HOA Officers were able to see and appreciate the materials used by FDUP in its housing project. Architect Cesar Aris was kind enough to lead the tour and inspection as participants (led by Bro. Ramon Espin of the Housing Committee) learned all they can, all the while considering the possibility of adapting such innovations to SHEC’s housing projects.

One support is the Seminar-Workshop on Solid Waste Management, conducted on April 25-26 at the St. Hannibal Training Center in Malibay, Pasay City. The activity benefited the SHHA Phase 2-Batch 3 homeowners by providing them with principles and practical tips on segregation, recycling, composting and other means of minimizing waste.

Initial works for SHEC’s proposed ecofarm in Norzagaray, Bulacan is underway. In April 15, 2009 a team of experts from the country’s Bureau of Soil and Water Management (BSWM) conducted a topographical survey and land tests to come up with an initial Land Use and Development Plan for the 4-hectare area. The team, coordinated by SHEC staff Jeffrey Abuan, is composed of engineers Mamerto Martinez, Antonio Rivera, Raymundo Galanta, and Jose Manguerra.
The comprehensive plan guides SHEC on best possible combination of trees, crops, as well as farm animals which are of best value for consumption and commerce, and are most suited to the area.
The SHEC Bulacan Ecofarm shall contribute to the sustainability of SHEC operations through its farm produce and retreat facilities. In addition, it will help promote community development by creating employment and by serving as a prototype on integrated farming where families and groups can learn.

Caritas scholars received a double treat by visiting the historical places of Mt. Samat and Mt. Bagac in Bataan on April 18-19, 2009. It was “double” not only because they visited two sites. These youth, together with SHEC’s education volunteers, also had two reasons for being there:

a) Closing party -- time for rest, relaxation, and recreation as they celebrated the end of another successful school year; and
b) Cultural enrichment – an opportunity to revisit important historical events that occurred in Bataan during the Spanish and Japanese eras.

A total of 2,000 members of PABANAL Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) joined a thanksgiving mass celebrated by Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales on April 30 at the Covered Court Compound of Barangay 649, Zone 68, in Baseco, Manila.

Immediately after, 240 PABANAL officers took their oath as servants of the community. The simple yet moving ceremony was led by the cardinal and SHEC leaders, Fr. Dexter Prudenciano, RCJ, Fr. Asis Bajao, and Fr. Christopher Sabili. Truly, the empowerment of lay leaders, especially poor ones, is a manifestation of the Kingdom of God at work in our on-going history.

Two meetings were held to finalize area layout and building design for SHEC Housing Project Phase 3. SHEC partnered with TAO-Pilipinas, a women-led, non-stock, non-profit, non-government organization of professionals in the field of architecture, planning, and engineering, providing technical assistance to the urban poor. Truly, empowered women are primary Kingdom workers, like the active women disciples of Jesus.
On April 16, SHEC management represented by Fr. Dexter Prudenciano (Executive Director) and Mr. George Espin (Housing Committee Head), together with the Homeowners Association officers Terry Ubaldo, Jean Sarmiento, Belen Sarmiento, Annabel Lagaran, and Lita Lopez, met with TAO-Pilipinas architects Arlene Lusterio and Miko Verzon for the final presentation of proposed designs.

A follow-up meeting was conducted on April 27 where SHEC Housing Committee and HOA Officers finalized the Phase 3 master list, as well as the planned SHEC visit to TAO-Pilipinas’ housing project along Katipunan Road, Quezon City.

Two thousand year s ago, our Lord Jesus Christ left his heavenly home to dwell with us. That is the ultimate act of love, the greatest gift that anyone can receive. SHEC’s own way of reflecting this example is its presence among the poor, reaching out to them as God did to humankind.

To remember and celebrate the incarnation story, a Christmas party was held on December 20, 2008 at the grounds of St Hannibal Subdivision Phase 2. It was graced by no less than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, along with Pasay City Vice Mayor Antonio “Tony” Calixto and Congressman Dr. Jose Antonio “Lito” Roxas.

Mass was celebrated by Fr. Bruno Rampazzo, after which gifts were distributed as a reminder to beneficiaries of the real reason for the celebration – the gift of salvation through Christ.

SHEC envisions the alleviation of poverty among the urban poor by building houses and providing livelihood opportunities. Our work is not complete, though, without addressing the poverty of the human spirit. Hence, spiritual enrichment has always been part of our programs for relocated families.

One such activity was a healing mass officiated by Father Fernando Suarez (Companions of the Cross Healing Ministry) at the St. Hannibal Subdivision Phase 2 on December 17, 2008. Families numbering to about 200 gathered in the common area of the subdivision to receive the transforming message of the Word of God, as well as physical healing through his servant, Fr. Suarez.

At SHEC, we do not just build houses; we point families to the one and true Healer and Builder of life.

Empowered Stewards.

In any Kingdom work where blessings have to be managed properly, efficient stewards are needed. To ensure proper stewardship in SHEC’s Kingdom programs, Ms. Maria Victoria Infante and Ms. Benchu Zabala facilitated some training for phase treasurers who learned the know-how of basic accounting and financial statements. Containerized Fishponds for Livelihood.

After necessary arrangements have been made with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) last October 3, 2008, six (6) containerized fishponds of red tilapia were set up for SHEC’s livelihood program last October 13, 2008, thanks to the assistance of Mr. Marvin P. Nasino of BFAR. Truly, the poor of Malibay may find concrete means for a better life with the fishponds. (October 13, 2008)

Another Step towards Healthy Ecology!

Holistic development necessarily goes with healthy ecology, and one way to realize this is through the serious implementation of a Solid Waste Management program (SWM). The SWM seminar attended by SHEC beneficiaries last October 24-25, 2008 was truly another step towards healthy ecology. The seminar was successful, thanks to Bro. Essential to the work of empowering communities is a basic know-how on cooperatives, which is why the SHEC staff equipped themselves with the ins-and-outs of cooperatives through a seminar which was held at the SHEC office. Fresh and Refreshing

Mission work is like farming in which laborers (missionaries and collaborators) need to pause, rest, muster energy and sharpen spiritual tools in view of a more fruitful harvest. September 5 to 11 were the SHEC staff’s opportune moments spent for renewing their mission commitment in the serene atmosphere of Boracay. Like Jesus who wasted long hours of silence in order to connect to his Father, the Source of his fresh energy to serve, the SHEC staff also spent quiet moments, not only to connect to the Source, but also to re-learn and savor anew the roots of SHEC mission work. ‘Fresh and refreshing,’ the staff went home well-rounded and fully fit again for mission work. This is the day that the Lord has made. It is a time of blessings and a time of great rejoicing. New housing units were turned over to housing beneficiaries from the two subdivisions of St. Hannibal. The event was graced by His Eminence Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales. The Environmental management committee started to prepare the seedlings in preparation for the vegetable garden exhibit which will be on December 9, 2007 during the turn over of the houses to the beneficiaries. The First batch of computer literacy program received their certificate of completion after 2 weeks of seminar on basic computer in St. Hannibal training Center. 20 students from different barangays graduated where most of them are SHaCC Community members. Seminar on Containerized Vegetable Gardening

The Bureau of Plant Industries under the Department of Agriculture conducted a seminar on Containerized Vegetable Gardening in St. Hannibal Training Center with SHaCC Community as the participants. After the Seminar BPI distributed some seeds to the community and visited the site where the people prepared their plants for the exhibit this coming November on the occasion of the Turn over of the houses to the beneficiaries.(September 14, 2007)

Fr. Dexter visited Dalaguete,Cebu to attend the Sacred Ordination of Rev. Fr. Alonso Heredia, rcj. Fr. Alfonso has been assigned in St. Anthony Boys Village as Asst. Prefect Discipline of the Intern Boys. After the ordination, Fr. Dexter also visited the place of Rev. Julius Descartin, a batch mate of Fr. Alfonso, who will be ordained this coming October 6, 2007 at Bantayan island, Cebu. (September 1, 2007)

Youth Sports Festival

Youth Formation Program/Committee launched a Sports Festival at the Rogationists Seminary, Merville Park. This activity was an event for them to establish relationship among themselves.
